Kuala Kangsar:The Department of Environment (DOE) is currently investigating the cause of a recent fish die-off in Sungai Perak near Sayong.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the DOE is collecting evidence and performing sample-matching tests to determine the source of the incident. Perak Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Teh Kok Lim mentioned that while the state government suspects waste discharge from a nearby palm oil mill as a possible cause, concrete evidence is required before any legal action can be taken.
Teh Kok Lim stated, "We suspect the palm oil mill waste discharge, but there must be strong evidence before the matter can be brought to court." The DOE's investigation is ongoing, and results are anticipated soon.
The incident gained significant attention after social media posts showed various species of fish, such as tengalan, baung, and patin, dead at the site. These images have raised concerns among the public about potential water pollution impacting the ecosystem and the livelihoods of local fishermen.
