Dewan Rakyat Special Session to Address US Tariffs on Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: The special sitting of Dewan Rakyat on May 5 is set to provide a platform for both government and opposition representatives to express their views regarding the United States’ retaliatory tariffs on Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MADANI government spokesman and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that the session will commence with a statement from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at 11 am, followed by a debate session. The debate will feature contributions from both sides of the political spectrum on the issue of these tariffs.

The session is expected to conclude with remarks from the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and the Ministry of Finance. Fahmi also noted that all Members of Parliament would receive notification about the special session, with the Speaker sending official letters today.

Prime Minister Anwar confirmed yesterday that the special session of Dewan Rakyat would focus on discussing the US tariffs imposed on Malaysia. Additionally, Fahmi mentioned that Tengku Zafrul would be visiting Washington to meet with his US counterpart to initiate discussions about the tariffs. Fahmi emphasized the need to wait for Zafrul’s return and report to the Cabinet before anticipating any announcements.

US President Donald Trump announced on April 3 the introduction of a basic tariff of 10 per cent on all countries, with a higher duty of 24 per cent targeting several countries, including Malaysia.
