Destination Convention Malaysia Launched To Boost Business Events Sector

Kuala lumpur: Destination Convention Malaysia, a new collaborative platform designed to elevate Malaysia as a multi-destination hub for business events, was introduced by Marriott International at a local hotel yesterday. This initiative aims to consolidate Malaysia's convention facilities, hospitality services, and rich destination experiences for event organisers from both regional and international markets.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the platform is a joint effort with the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), and Sabah Convention Bureau. These organisations are working together to market Malaysia's diverse offerings and capabilities in the business events sector. As of June 30, MyCEB has already secured 416 events set between 2026 and 2030, projecting an economic impact of RM3.98 billion.

The platform strategically combines the established convention infrastructure and global reach of destinations like Kuala Lumpur with the unique cultural, natural, and incentive experiences offered in Sarawak, Sabah, and other regions. This comprehensive approach provides event organisers with an expanded array of options for planning business events.

George Varughese, Marriott International's Market Vice President for Malaysia, emphasized that Malaysia possesses vital elements to emerge as a leading business events destination in the Asia-Pacific region. He remarked, "With strong connectivity, world-class hospitality, and a diverse range of destinations and experiences, Malaysia has all the ingredients to be a leading business events destination in Asia-Pacific."

Varughese also highlighted that Destination Convention Malaysia leverages these strengths to attract more events and craft memorable experiences for both organisers and delegates.

Meanwhile, MyCEB Chief Executive Officer Tan Mei Phing noted that the robust pipeline of business events signifies the trust organisers have in Malaysia's capabilities, presenting an opportunity to highlight the country's diverse destinations. She stated, "By bringing destinations together, we can showcase the collective strength of Malaysia's business events ecosystem and present an even more compelling proposition to regional and international organisers."

Discussions during the launch also addressed evolving expectations among business event organisers, including a stronger focus on personalisation, wellness, sustainability, technology, and destination-led experiences. The platform allows organisers to integrate meetings and convention facilities with accommodation, dining, wellness options, and local experiences that include cultural, culinary, and nature-based activities.

Marriott International currently operates 65 hotels across Malaysia, enhancing major convention venues with accommodation, dining, wellness facilities, and local experiences, thereby supporting the objectives of Destination Convention Malaysia.
