Kuala lumpur: National track cycling legend Datuk Azizulhasni Awang emphasized the need for a decision on his participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games to be made before the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. Azizulhasni highlighted the importance of resolving this matter ahead of the Asian Games as the qualification process for the Los Angeles Olympics will commence shortly after the continental event, necessitating clear direction for all involved parties.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist stated that any decision should be reached following discussions with all relevant stakeholders. Azizulhasni remarked that the decision is not solely about his desire to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics but whether Malaysia still requires his expertise for the event. He expressed readiness to plan his future based on Malaysia's needs.

Azizulhasni stressed the necessity of discussions with the Youth and Sports Ministry, the National Sports Council, and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation to refine strategies. He elaborated on the complexity of the Olympic qualification process, which involves participating in numerous international events, including Class 1 and Class 2 competitions, and requires significant commitment and travel.

Currently, Azizulhasni is concentrating on his preparations for the Asian Games, starting on September 19. Despite his focus on the upcoming games, he acknowledged a personal desire to conclude his career at its peak, noting his recent victory in Glasgow as a significant milestone. Azizulhasni hopes his continued success at the age of 38 serves to motivate and inspire younger athletes in Malaysia.

Azizulhasni's recent triumph at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, where he claimed the gold medal in the keirin event, marked the end of a 16-year wait to become a Commonwealth Games champion.
