Kuala lumpur: Dataran Merdeka must continue to be activated through arts, cultural, educational, and community programmes to ensure it remains a vibrant public space for Malaysians from all walks of life, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh. She emphasized the importance of public participation in the revitalization efforts of the iconic area.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hannah highlighted the government's significant investment in upgrading the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and other heritage structures in the area. However, she noted that these efforts would be meaningless without the involvement of the public in celebrating the rich heritage and potential of the city. Hannah made these remarks during her speech at the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur Festival 2026 and the launch of the Asian Music Games (AMG) Kuala Lumpur 2026 at Dataran Merdeka.
Hannah further expressed that heritage buildings alone could not bring a city to life. She stated that while the buildings and lights are beautiful, it is the people, bands, parents, supporters, and sponsors who truly bring Dataran Merdeka to life. She acknowledged the collective effort that made the space vibrant during the event.
Hannah expressed her hope that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Think City would continue organizing programmes and events at Dataran Merdeka to encourage greater public participation. She underscored that Dataran Merdeka belongs to the people of Malaysia and urged for continued use of the space to bring Malaysians together.
During the event, Hannah officially declared the Kuala Lumpur Festival 2026 closed and announced the commencement of the Asian Music Games Kuala Lumpur 2026, which is scheduled for September this year. Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud was also present at the event.
