Penang: All members, including party leaders, must abide by any decisions and resolutions reached at the DAP special congress scheduled to take place on July 12, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said. The party Central Executive Committee (CEC) member and former Penang DAP chairman emphasized the importance of this directive to ensure that the party's actions reflect the collective will of its members.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the announcement aims to empower delegates to convey the views of party members and supporters, including non-members, through established party mechanisms. This approach ensures that any decision reached at the congress is representative of the majority's interests and opinions.
Chow reiterated the significance of the meeting, as highlighted by Secretary-General Anthony Loke, describing it as an internal party referendum of great importance. The congress will provide delegates with the platform to decide whether party office-bearers should relinquish all positions held in the government. Loke assured that the party's 40 members of parliament will maintain their support for the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim until the completion of the current term.
Furthermore, Chow clarified the nature of discussions concerning the party's role within the government. He explained that in a coalition government consisting of multiple component parties, it is customary to deliberate on the party's involvement in the administration as part of democratic principles. Chow stressed that the Democratic Action Party (DAP) is not withdrawing its support from the MADANI Government. The discussions are centered around DAP's role in the government, particularly regarding the holding of ministerial and other significant positions, rather than exiting the government.
