Kuala lumpur: The Public Works Ministry (KKR) anticipates an increase in construction costs for buildings situated in earthquake-prone areas. This rise is attributed to the necessity for advanced construction methods and structural specifications designed to withstand seismic activities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan emphasized that any development within the zones identified by the Malaysia Seismic Hazard Zone Map must adhere to established safety guidelines. These measures ensure that building structures can endure potential earthquakes, thereby safeguarding public safety.
Dr. Ahmad noted that the increase in costs is linked to specific construction requirements such as measurements, cement compositions, and steel reinforcement. These are vital to enhancing the resilience of structures against earthquakes. He highlighted the recent minor earthquakes in the Segamat district, which resulted in slight damages, including minor cracks at Segamat Hospital.
Furthermore, Ahmad, who also serves as Pontian MP, mentioned that future projects, like the new additional building at Pontian Hospital, will incorporate earthquake-resistant designs. Although the Pontian district has not experienced earthquakes, its proximity to the sea necessitates precautionary measures in construction planning.
He added that 15 government buildings were identified with minor damage due to weak earthquakes in Segamat last year, with repair costs estimated at RM550,000. These events underscore the importance of incorporating seismic considerations in building projects across vulnerable regions.
