Kuala lumpur: The issue of plastic waste and electronic waste (e-waste) entering the country requires urgent action and comprehensive coordination among enforcement agencies, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. He highlighted ongoing investigations and disposal measures involving over 800 e-waste containers, which are being coordinated alongside the Department of Environment (DOE), the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), the Customs Department, and the police.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Port Klang serves as a key example where the AKPS acts as the coordinator, necessitating the presence of the Customs Department, police, and DOE upon receiving information or complaints. For land routes, the police coordinate with relevant agencies for further action. Proposals for a moratorium are also under review, with plans to present these views at the National Governance Committee (JTK) meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister.
Port Klang AKPS commander Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal emphasized a firm approach by detaining containers suspected of carrying e-waste until the DOE completes verification. He stated that the AKPS is committed to systematically recording every detention and ensuring release only through case meetings. The Customs Department will maintain a master register for container segregation.
The DOE's presence is mandatory during container openings, and the AKPS is developing intelligence methods to identify high-risk containers. Containers found in violation of the law will be rejected.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who chaired the committee meeting, stressed the MACC's strong commitment to combating misconduct and corruption, including areas like government procurement, enforcement, and international mega agreements. He urged all parties, particularly civil servants, to comply with the law and uphold integrity.
He also lauded the MACC's proactive measures and congratulated the commission on launching its new tagline, 'Berani dan Radikal Perangi Rasuah' (Brave and Radical in Fighting Corruption), reflecting its commitment to combating corruption.
