Communications Ministry to Facilitate Google’s $2 Billion Investment

Kuala lumpur: The Communications Ministry, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will continue to facilitate the implementation of a $2 billion investment by technology giant Google in Malaysia. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the importance of infrastructure readiness and regulatory compliance as key components in Malaysia's strategy to become a regional hub for secure data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this significant investment includes the establishment of Google's first data center and cloud services in Malaysia. The initiative is expected to generate an economic impact of $3.2 billion and create 26,500 jobs by 2030. Fahmi highlighted Malaysia's continued reputation as a leading destination for the digital economy, stating this in a Facebook post today.

Fahmi also shared multimedia content from a video conference session involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Alphabet and Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat, along with her team. The session underscored the collaborative efforts between the Malaysian government and Google.

In May 2024, Google announced an investment commitment of RM9.4 billion in Malaysia, focusing on the development of its first data center and Google Cloud Region to meet the growing demand for cloud services at both local and global levels. This commitment also includes AI literacy programs aimed at students and educators in the country.
