Kuala lumpur: The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) are set to meet with the production team and streaming platform iQIYI to address the issues concerning the drama "Madu atau Racun." The meeting comes in response to mounting public concern and controversy surrounding the drama's content.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Communications Minister and MADANI Government spokesperson Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is also expected to be part of the discussion. Fahmi stated that FINAS, led by its CEO, had informed them about the drama being streamed on iQIYI, which has generated public unease.
Currently, content on Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms like iQIYI is not directly subject to FINAS licensing oversight. However, the ministry has instructed CMCF, under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and FINAS to meet with the production team and iQIYI to seek clarification on the drama's content. This directive was shared during Fahmi's weekly press conference following the Cabinet meeting.
Fahmi outlined the regulatory responsibilities, noting that FINAS oversees filmmaking and cinema activities while MCMC manages television broadcasting and communications. He highlighted that OTT platforms are not yet fully governed by the same licensing framework as conventional broadcasters. Despite this, the government maintains a firm stance against any production that touches on religious and racial sensitivities.
Fahmi emphasized the importance of balancing freedom of expression with the responsibility to respect religious values, social harmony, and racial and cultural sensitivities, crucial for national unity. He warned that the government would not hesitate to take appropriate action if investigations revealed breaches of existing guidelines, regulations, or provisions.
Following the meeting, FINAS is expected to release a statement detailing the discussions' outcomes and any subsequent actions. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr. Zulkifli Hasan earlier expressed his ministry's rejection of the drama's streaming, citing elements that infringe on religious sensitivities and local cultural norms.
"Madu atau Racun," a 12-episode series produced by MIG Production Sdn Bhd, began streaming on iQIYI on August 14, 2026.
