Classic Land Rover Jeeps Designated as Iconic Tourism Vehicles in Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands:Classic Land Rover jeeps are set to become Iconic Tourism Vehicles in Cameron Highlands (KIPCH) following a decision by the Transport Ministry (MOT). This initiative aims to support the local tourism industry while maintaining the unique identity of the highland area.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MOT plans to implement the KIPCH initiative in the first quarter of 2027, contingent upon the finalization of implementation mechanisms, licensing requirements, safety conditions, and designated operating routes. The classic Land Rover jeeps will operate exclusively for tourism activities at specific locations and will require valid licensing to provide passenger transport services.

The ministry has stated that vehicles exceeding the 15-year age limit may operate as tourism vehicles if they meet safety, technical, and licensing standards. This initiative could potentially involve more than 60 vehicles. The Tourism Ministry believes these jeeps, synonymous with Cameron Highlands, could enhance the area's tourist appeal, given their suitability for the hilly and challenging terrain, particularly for off-road activities.

To ensure orderly implementation, the MOT, in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), is conducting engagement sessions with stakeholders including the Pahang state government, Cameron Highlands District Council (MDCH), tourism agencies, and local operators. These sessions focus on finalizing routes, operating areas, pick-up and drop-off points, and compliance with safety standards.

The initiative underscores the government's commitment to balancing regulatory compliance and transport safety with efforts to boost local tourism while preserving the distinctive identity of Cameron Highlands as a highland tourist destination.
