Kuala terengganu: A female civil servant in Terengganu lost RM99,276 after falling victim to two fraudulent online investment schemes.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor revealed that the 38-year-old victim initially responded to a "Webull investment scheme" advertisement on the Telegram application on May 1. The scheme promised lucrative returns within just six hours. The victim selected a starter package worth RM1,000 and subsequently made several additional payments under the pretense of enabling the withdrawal of investment profits.
Azli explained that the victim was deceived into making 12 payments totaling RM48,965 into four different accounts over the course of a week, from May 1 to May 7. The fraudulent scheme continued to exploit the victim's trust and financial resources.
On May 11, the victim was further ensnared by a second scam, known as Sunway Trade, through the same Telegram application. This time, she made bank transfers totaling RM50,311 over three days, after being promised substantial returns within just 30 minutes. It was only after being asked to make an additional payment of RM38,527, purportedly for extra costs, that the victim suspected she had been cheated.
She subsequently lodged a police report at 2.40 pm yesterday. The case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which addresses cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
