Chief Judge Of Malaya Hasnah Mohammed Hashim To Assume Chief Justice Role

Kuala lumpur: Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim will assume the powers and responsibilities of the Chief Justice, including functions under the Constitution, until the post is filled.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Office of the Chief Registrar stated that this decision aligns with Article 131A of the Federal Constitution and the provisions of Sections 9(1)(b) and 9(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 [Act 91]. The statement emphasized the Malaysian judiciary’s commitment to its role as the guardian of justice and its dedication to serving the people and the nation.

Hasnah, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 66 on May 15, has had her tenure extended by six months until November 14. The position of Chief Justice became vacant after the mandatory retirement of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. Tengku Maimun was the first woman to hold the nation’s highest judicial office, having been appointed Chief Justice on May 2, 2019, succeeding Tan Sri Richard Malanjum.
