Sepang:Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is hopeful that Petronas will extend its role as the title sponsor of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) beyond the current contract, which concludes this year. This partnership, initiated in 2022, is deemed crucial for the continuity of the event.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, SIC's chief executive officer, Azhan Shafriman Hanif, emphasized the importance of successful discussions between Petronas and Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder of MotoGP. An agreement would allow both parties to continue organizing the prestigious race together, with a sponsorship extension that aligns with Dorna's five-year contract, lasting until 2031.
Shafriman expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations would lead to a favorable outcome. He highlighted Petronas as a brand closely associated with MotoGP and stated that matching the previous five-year contract with Dorna is a priority. He also noted that SIC has not yet received any updates on Petronas' decision, stressing that the final decision lies with the company.
Petronas took over as the Malaysian GP title sponsor in 2022, succeeding Shell. Recent discussions involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MotoGP executive director Carmelo Ezpeleta also underscored the importance of Petronas' continued sponsorship. Ahmad Zahid mentioned that the proposal for Petronas to maintain its sponsorship would be deliberated with Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz.
