Cheng Hoe Acknowledges Player Release Setback Ahead of ASEAN Cup

Kuala lumpur: Interim Harimau Malaya head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has acknowledged that the national team's preparations for the 2026 Hyundai ASEAN Cup have been slightly affected after several players in his plans were not released by their clubs to join the squad. However, he remained confident that the selected players, despite many being youngsters and new faces, would be able to develop a good understanding before the tournament begins on July 24.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Cheng Hoe expressed that the situation posed a challenge as the AFF competition is usually held outside the FIFA calendar, which affects the team's preparations. He expressed gratitude to the clubs that did release their players and maintained a positive outlook on the current squad.

Cheng Hoe emphasized the importance of the short preparation period, requiring every player to quickly adapt and understand the style of play and tactical approach that would be implemented throughout the campaign. When discussing his personal target, Cheng Hoe stated his preference for a realistic approach, focusing on one match at a time.

He highlighted the necessity of monitoring each match closely, especially the players' fitness levels, to prevent any serious injuries. Harimau Malaya is set to kick off their Group B campaign against Myanmar at Thuwunna Stadium on July 25, followed by matches against Laos at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on July 28, Thailand at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on August 1, and the Philippines in Cheras on August 8.

The tournament's structure will see the top two teams from each group advance to the two-legged semi-finals in mid-August, with the finals scheduled for August 22 and 26.
