Kuala Lumpur:The Sessions Court has dismissed rapper Caprice's application to delay the payment of RM220,000 in damages and costs awarded to independent preacher Ebit Lew. The case involved defamatory statements made by Caprice in 2023.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Judge Zuhrina Mohamed Nor rejected Caprice's application, which was filed in August following the court's decision against him. The ruling addressed seven defamatory statements made by Caprice, whose real name is Ariz Ramli, through podcasts and video clips.
The court has also mandated Caprice to pay an additional RM2,000 in costs for the unsuccessful application. Representing Ebit were lawyers Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader and Fatin Izyan Mazlan, while Caprice was represented by lawyer Mohd Rezan Ezra Muhammad Mosinal.
On August 17, the court ruled in favor of Ebit, instructing Caprice to apologize and pay RM220,000 in damages and costs. The total damages included RM50,000 each for general, exemplary, compensatory, and aggravated damages, along with RM20,000 in legal costs.
Caprice was also ordered to issue and disseminate an apology to Ebit on his social media platforms within 48 hours of the court order being sealed. Ebit had filed the defamation suit on September 29, 2023, claiming that Caprice's recordings falsely portrayed him as having sexually harassed and exploited Indonesian influencer Mondy Tatto. Ebit further alleged that the statements depicted him as irresponsible and accused him of exploiting religion for personal gain.
