Bursa Malaysia Opens Lower Amid Profit Taking After US Holiday

Kuala lumpur: Bursa Malaysia opened lower on Tuesday as investors took profits in selected heavyweights, given an absence of Wall Street leads following the United States' Labour Day holiday. At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 2.89 points, or 0.16 percent, to 1,711.90 from Monday's close of 1,714.79. The benchmark index opened 1.65 points lower at 1,713.14.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, market breadth was positive, with gainers outnumbering losers 154 to 144. A total of 316 counters were unchanged, 2,185 untraded, and 25 suspended. Turnover stood at 417.63 million shares worth RM152.17 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng noted that despite Wall Street's closure, a look at the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) futures indicated a 300-point drop amid trade tensions between Canada and the US.

Thong highlighted that some regional markets reacted negatively to the unexpected strength in US job data as traders grew cautious ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting this month. Domestically, investors returned to accumulate blue chips that had recently been sold down. He added, "Overall sentiment is still cautious, as illustrated by the lower daily volume of below four billion shares. Amid the numerous headwinds, we believe ongoing consolidation will persist and we expect the benchmark index to trend within the 1,710-1,720 range today."
