Buntong Market Set for Major Upgrade to Address Safety and Infrastructure Issues

Ipoh:The Pasar Buntong market is set to undergo significant upgrades aimed at resolving long-standing issues related to safety and infrastructure that have troubled traders and the public.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Buntong assemblyman M. Thulsi highlighted that the decision to upgrade the 70-year-old market follows public complaints and a comprehensive study by the authorities. Thulsi noted that the market's current structure is inadequate for present needs, particularly concerning safety, drainage, and traffic congestion.

The market upgrade is expected to enhance comfort for both traders and visitors. The announcement coincides with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent declaration that the Budget 2027 allocation for small projects in local authority areas has been increased to nearly RM700 million. This budget will cover various upgrades, including parks, public toilets, and stalls.

The Pasar Buntong market upgrade will be a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Ipoh City Council. The redevelopment will focus on improving facilities such as trading spaces, drainage systems, and amenities for the elderly and disabled. The project is anticipated to take four to five years to complete.

In the interim, a temporary market valued at RM2 million is being constructed near the original site to ensure the livelihoods of approximately 230 traders are not disrupted during the upgrade. This temporary facility is expected to be ready by early next year.

Local resident R. Gomaty expressed approval of the market's redevelopment, citing the need for improved safety features and cleaner surroundings to attract shoppers. She emphasized that the government's allocation for the market upgrade demonstrates its commitment to addressing the problems faced by Pasar Buntong.
