Bukit Kayu Hitam Shooting Possibly Linked to MCBA Enforcement – DG

Bukit kayu hitam: Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has not ruled out the possibility that this morning's shooting incident involving an agency commander was a reaction from parties impacted by enforcement actions carried out by his agency. Mohd Shuhaily stated that the agency was prepared for such scenarios and had advised his officers and personnel to be vigilant about potential threats recently.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Shuhaily had, over the past four weeks, highlighted the potential for criminal threats in a speech to his commanders. He expressed that while they were aware of the risks, the escalation that occurred this morning was unexpected. The incident involved a vehicle driven by Bukit Kayu Hitam MCBA commander SAC Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir near the entrance of Al Muhajirin Mosque, approximately a kilometer from the Malaysia-Thailand border.

Mohd Shuhaily mentioned that the Bukit Kayu Hitam MCBA had seized nearly RM3.1 million worth of contraband in an operation between January 15 and February 15, marking a new record for the area but also leading to the risks demonstrated by the morning's events. He shared that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail gave full support to the MCBA, with the prime minister personally contacting him early in the morning to ensure agency improvements.

Among potential improvements, Mohd Shuhaily pointed out that MCBA personnel currently lack firearms, suggesting that this is an area that could be addressed soon, along with providing bulletproof vests to enhance the safety of his subordinates. He reassured the public that the shooting was an isolated incident not involving the public, and there was no need for concern.

He confirmed that Mohd Nasaruddin is in a safe, stable condition and remains in high spirits. He praised Mohd Nasaruddin's composure, noting that he comes from a unit trained to manage their emotions and reactions, highlighting the desired qualities for all officers and personnel in Bukit Kayu Hitam.
