Budget 2027 Increases Islamic Affairs Funding to RM3.1 Billion

Kuala Lumpur:The allocation for Islamic affairs has risen to RM3.1 billion under Budget 2027, up from RM2.6 billion last year, highlighting the government's focus on strengthening Islamic development, religious education, and the welfare of religious personnel.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the director-general of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee, emphasized that safeguarding the welfare of religious personnel aligns with their roles in providing Islamic education and supporting community activities at mosques and surau.

The government will fully cover Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) contributions for 40,000 religious personnel, including imams and teachers, through Lembaga Tabung Haji. Additionally, a special incentive of RM150 per month will be provided to 500 KAFA teachers who instruct pupils with special needs, utilizing methods such as sign language and the Braille Quran.

Proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act, requiring drivers convicted of offenses involving alcohol or drugs to compensate victims, align with the principle of hifz al-nafs (preservation of life) under Maqasid Syariah, which emphasizes the protection of human life and victims' rights.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) welcomed the PERKESO contributions initiative, with chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin noting it could enhance the effectiveness and motivation of religious personnel, particularly those with specialized teaching skills.

Salehuddin also noted the significant policy development reflected by the RM3.1 billion allocation increase. However, he called for a comprehensive assessment of the allocation's effectiveness, emphasizing the need for knowledge dissemination, moral development, and social justice within the Muslim community.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will maintain the prominence of Islam in Malaysia, providing a one-off RM750 contribution to recognize the service of 70,000 KAFA teachers, takmir teachers, imams, and other religious personnel.
