Budget 2027 Aims to Boost Growth of Bumiputera Firms

Kuala Lumpur:The Budget 2027 announcement includes measures to raise government procurement thresholds for Bumiputera contractors in Grades G1 to G4, marking a significant step toward enhancing their participation in the national economic value chain.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, up to RM1 billion in financing will be allocated through the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (TERAJU) to bolster Bumiputera companies' access to capital. This allocation is intended to aid in expanding their operations, building capacity, enhancing competitiveness, and penetrating new markets.

TERAJU's chief executive officer, Junady Nawawi, stated that Budget 2027 signifies a shift from merely increasing participation to cultivating more resilient and competitive Bumiputera companies capable of scaling up. He emphasized that the budget reinforces the implementation of the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35), ensuring that opportunities translate into tangible growth for these companies.

The budget also includes a RM58 billion procurement target for government-linked companies (GLCs) and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) from Bumiputera companies. Efforts to update GLC procurement guidelines are underway to consider company growth, innovation, and market penetration capabilities.

Junady highlighted that this approach could elevate Bumiputera companies from simple vendors to strategic partners within supply chains and industrial ecosystems, creating opportunities for sustained growth.

Overall, TERAJU sees Budget 2027 as a pivotal move to strengthen the Bumiputera economic ecosystem, focusing on financing access, procurement opportunities, strategic investments, capacity building, and market expansion. These initiatives are expected to support the achievement of PuTERA35 targets and enhance TERAJU's role in driving the Bumiputera agenda, ultimately contributing more significantly to the national economy by 2035.
