Jakarta: Strengthening connectivity is crucial to building a strong foundation for Borneo's regional growth, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said. He emphasized that Sarawak is making significant investments in infrastructure, utilities, and telecommunications, alongside expanding transport and logistics networks to address rising industrial demand.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, these developments include integrated land transport systems, a new international airport, and a new deep-sea port aimed at enhancing both regional and global connectivity. Speaking at the Indonesia Economic Summit (IES) 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Abang Johari highlighted the potential of Indonesia's Kijing International Seaport in Kalimantan to complement Sarawak's port developments.
He noted that the combined port infrastructure would open doors for complementary operations, improving long-haul connectivity to East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The text of his speech was later made available to the media.
Abang Johari also emphasized that the resumption of direct flights between Kuching and Pontianak represents more than just the reopening of an air route. It serves to reconnect communities across Borneo, fostering trade, tourism, education, and business cooperation. Additionally, Sarawak has established AirBorneo to further strengthen regional air links and expand direct connections between the island and other parts of the world.
He pointed out that Borneo, the world's third-largest island, is home to over 20 million people across Sarawak, Sabah, parts of Indonesia, and Brunei, with a rich tapestry of cultural diversity and natural resources. In a time marked by global economic uncertainty and increasing competition, Abang Johari stated that regional cooperation remains essential to ensuring that economies stay open and connected, particularly within ASEAN.
