BNF Offers Chance To Learn Sape, Explore Sarawak Culture

Kuala lumpur: Visitors to the Borneo Native Festival (BNF) 2026 are being offered the opportunity to learn to play the Sape, a Sarawak traditional string musical instrument, while gaining exposure to the state's cultural heritage.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak Unity Foundation manager Roslin Latip stated that the initiative aims to introduce Sarawak's traditions to a wider audience and foster understanding among Malaysia's diverse communities. She highlighted that visitors, both local and international, can learn to play the traditional instrument and gain insight into the culture of the Sarawak people.

Roslin emphasized that while there are places in Kuala Lumpur that offer Sape lessons, access remains limited. The festival provides an ideal platform to organize Sape learning classes and introduce attendees to the Sarawak language. She noted that their exhibition booth has become a major attraction at the festival, with Sape performances drawing significant interest from visitors.

The foundation's participation in BNF is geared towards showcasing Sarawak's traditional heritage not only to Malaysians in Peninsular Malaysia but also to the international visitors attending the festival. Roslin explained the uniqueness of the Sape, originally used by the Orang Ulu community in Sarawak for healing purposes due to its calming melodies.

Historically, the Orang Ulu community, living in poverty and remote forest areas, created the Sape for its soothing qualities. Over time, the instrument has evolved beyond its traditional role, becoming part of cultural performances and contemporary music. Despite its expanded use, efforts continue to preserve the traditional elements of Sape music to maintain its authenticity.

BNF 2026 is being held at Central Market from May 22 to 24. This annual event is organized by the Kuala Lumpur Arts Enthusiasts Association (Sukaseni) in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival in Sabah and the Gawai Dayak celebration in Sarawak.
