Alor setar: Malaysia's largest book fair, Big Bad Wolf (BBW), is playing a pivotal role in promoting reading literacy and enhancing English language proficiency among the public, particularly targeting the younger generation in Kedah.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Education, Religion, Communications and Information Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Azam Abd Samat emphasized the importance of nurturing a reading culture from an early age. He highlighted that knowledge is essential for developing a capable future generation. The book fair, held at Stadium Sultan Abdul Halim, Alor Setar, from today until August 9, serves as an ideal venue for this purpose. Datuk Mohd Azam noted the availability of numerous books suitable for children, with a focus on English titles. The event aims to boost public interest in improving English proficiency through interactive illustrations that help readers become more familiar with the language.
Datuk Mohd Azam further stated that the state government is encouraging collective efforts from various agencies and society to foster a reading culture and cultivate a knowledgeable generation. This initiative is seen as a stepping stone towards advancing both the state and the nation.
Meanwhile, BBW representative Chloe Lim Sooi Yee expressed anticipation of drawing 50,000 visitors to the fair, a target expected to be met with the state government's support. She noted that the BBW event coincides with the Temasya Orang Kedah (TOK) at Stadium Darul Aman, and she hopes attendees of the festival will also visit the book sale. To entice visitors, the BBW mascot will make appearances at TOK from today until Sunday. Participants who spot the mascot are encouraged to take photos and share them on social media, tagging BBW for a chance to win cash vouchers and prizes, including a 10-gram gold bar.
The 11-day book sale, running from 10 am to 10 pm, showcases 40 percent new titles, offering a vast selection of reading materials to visitors. Admission to the event is free, making it accessible to all.
