Kuala lumpur: About 93,000 of the 850,000 persons with disabilities (PwDs) registered with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) as of June this year are those with autism, the Dewan Negara was informed today. Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying highlighted this statistic, noting the government's response to the growing number of registrations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the increase in registrations has motivated the government to enhance initiatives focusing on early intervention, education, and skills training for individuals with autism. Lim announced that beginning this year, a one-off subsidy of RM1,000 will be provided to each eligible child with autism to cover learning and therapy fees.

Lim further elaborated on recent government efforts, stating that the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) recently inaugurated an Autism Service Centre in Bangi. This centre serves as a one-stop facility offering quality, affordable, and accessible services for those with autism.

Additionally, Lim mentioned that the government is committed to strengthening collaborations between JKM and non-governmental organizations like the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM). This partnership aims to ensure that individuals with autism are not left behind and are empowered to reach their full potential.
