Bernama CEO and RTM Director-General Join Malaysian Media Council Board

Kuala lumpur: Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Director-General Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman have been appointed as government representatives on the board of the Malaysian Media Council.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the appointments were made by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil on January 14, in accordance with Section 8(1)(b) of the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025. The council expressed its approval of the new appointments, highlighting Datuk Suhaimi's extensive experience in broadcasting and journalism, along with his leadership roles in both private and public media sectors.

Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida is recognized for her expertise in managing news organizations and her involvement in media administration at the national level. Her experience within the national mainstream media ecosystem was also noted in the council's statement.

The council further stated that with the appointment of these two government representatives, 20 out of the 21 positions on the council's board have been filled. However, the council chairman's position remains vacant, with nominations for the post still open.

In addition to the government representatives, the council board consists of four members from media companies, four media practitioners, and four members representing public interests, including academics and civil society. Six other members have been appointed under Section 8(1)(f) of the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025 to ensure gender equality, regional balance, and diversity in media concerning language and format.

The council board members, selected since November last year, will serve for a two-year term. The council is awaiting government allocations to establish a secretariat and fulfill its functions and mandate.
