Kuala Lampur:Bangladesh is pursuing a shift from conventional trade to greater economic integration by diversifying trade, expanding investments, and strengthening business partnerships through various business engagements.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bangladesh's Deputy High Commissioner Mosammat Shahanara Monica emphasized the need for the country to explore joint ventures, technology partnerships, and new investment opportunities in emerging sectors. She highlighted the potential for combining Malaysian capital, technology, and expertise with Bangladesh's market capabilities during her remarks at the Bangladesh-Malaysia Business Networking Dinner.
Monica also pointed out that ongoing discussions toward a Malaysia-Bangladesh Free Trade Agreement, expected to conclude by 2027, could create greater predictability for businesses. She noted that Bangladesh's economic base is diversifying beyond ready-made garments to include sectors such as agriculture, food processing, pharmaceuticals, leather, IT, and more, offering Malaysian companies opportunities to invest and expand regionally.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Taskeen Ahmed expressed that Bangladesh is engaging with Malaysian business partners to encourage investment in the country. He mentioned that Malaysian companies have already invested nearly US$800 million in Bangladesh. Ahmed also highlighted the potential for cooperation in the halal sector, suggesting that adopting Malaysian halal certification could benefit Bangladeshi manufacturers globally.
From January 2025 to July 2026, Bangladesh exported approximately US$305.55 million in goods to Malaysia, while imports from Malaysia were around US$2.26 billion. Bangladesh's exports include garments and leather products, while Malaysia supplies mineral fuels and machinery, among other goods. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury attended the dinner alongside 38 members of the Bangladesh delegation, with the DCCI business delegation visiting Malaysia from September 22 to 25.
