Ban on Teachers’ Day Celebrations in Selangor Schools: A Move Towards Thriftiness

Shah alam: The decision to halt Teachers' Day celebrations at school and district levels for institutions under the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) aligns with the government's emphasis on thriftiness amid the global energy supply crisis. JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad affirmed that this move also follows the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's directive to spend prudently in light of the uncertain global situation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision by JAIS also considers the financial impact on parents or guardians, who traditionally feel compelled to provide gifts to teachers at their children's behest. Mohd Shahzihan emphasized that this practice should be halted in the current economic climate to alleviate financial burdens on families.

Mohd Shahzihan further explained that JAIS might reconsider allowing Teachers' Day celebrations in the future, contingent upon an improved situation. The considerations will include ensuring that the duration of the celebrations does not disrupt the classroom schedule and that the events remain simple and consistent across all schools under JAIS's supervision.

He also highlighted that the Selangor state government, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), and JAIS continue to appreciate teachers' contributions to education. In recognition of teachers' dedication, a Selangor State-Level Teachers' Day Celebration is scheduled for May 21, 2026. This event will honor outstanding teachers and school achievements across various categories, with a budget exceeding RM200,000 funded by MAIS and the Selangor State Government, distributed as cash or grants to selected teachers and schools.

The decision not to conduct Teachers' Day celebrations at the school and district levels was initially communicated through a JAIS circular, which gained significant attention on social media.
