Kuala Lumpur:Sarawak Sarawak's approach to early childhood development should ensure equity across all geographical locations, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Awang Tengah emphasized that the quality of a child's early development in Sarawak should not be influenced by their place of residence, family income, or distance from urban centers. He made these remarks during the launch of the Sarawak Preschool International Convention 2026.
Awang Tengah, who also serves as the Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development as well as the Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment in Sarawak, highlighted the importance of preparing children for a future characterized by technological advancements and rapid changes. He clarified that this preparation does not involve introducing formal academics prematurely or increasing screen time for young children. Instead, it involves nurturing essential qualities such as curiosity, creativity, communication, self-discipline, cooperation, resilience, and strong values.
He further stated that Sarawak's cultural and linguistic diversity is a significant asset. Children should grow up understanding their identity and origins while respecting the cultures and identities of others. Awang Tengah also stressed the importance of fostering children's confidence to engage with both Malaysia and the global community, aspiring to international standards while staying rooted in Sarawak.
He called for stronger coordination among the government, institutions, communities, and the private sector with a unified goal of achieving better outcomes for children in Sarawak.
