Kuching: The recent earthquake disasters in Myanmar and Thailand have highlighted the need for ASEAN countries to intensify efforts to establish a Conformity Assessment Body. This body would ensure that building materials produced, imported, and used within the region meet international safety and quality standards.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi emphasized the importance of this initiative during his speech at the 12th ASEAN Building and Construction Working Group (BCWG) meeting. The meeting, part of the International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo 2025, provided a platform for professionals and experts to discuss best practices, innovative solutions, and collaborative strategies in the building and construction industry.
The Works Minister highlighted the significance of the Building and Construction Mutual Recognition Arrangement (BCMRA), signed in Cambodia on March 9 last year. He urged ASEAN members to expedite the process of ratifying the BCMRA to establish the Joint Sectoral Committee, which would facilitate the recognition and harmonization of construction material standards across the region.
During the meeting, the importance of construction material standards and the challenges associated with ensuring their quality were underscored. The discussions aimed to address these challenges and explore opportunities for enhancing standards in the industry.
Delegates at the meeting also visited the newly built RM27.5 million Malaysia Public Works Laboratory (MKRM) Sarawak. The facility, one of six construction material testing labs in Malaysia, represents the country’s commitment to providing testing facilities for regulators and industry players. The visit aimed to offer insights into Malaysia’s initiatives and explore potential areas for future collaboration.
