ASEAN Coordination Key To Strengthening Online Safety For Children – Teo

Banten: A coordinated ASEAN approach in addressing global challenges, including efforts to strengthen online safety for children, would help amplify the region's collective voice on the international stage, according to Malaysian Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She emphasized the importance of cooperative efforts among the 11-member bloc, which shares cultural values and stands to benefit from unified actions and initiatives.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Teo highlighted the potential for a stronger ASEAN presence through coordinated efforts during a meeting with Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Nezar Patria. The meeting was attended by key figures such as Bernama's CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and RTM's deputy director-general Hamzah Ishak. Teo is currently on a three-day working visit to Indonesia for the National Press Day 2026 in Banten.

Teo specifically pointed to online safety as an area ripe for regional collaboration. She noted Indonesia's proactive steps in blocking the artificial intelligence platform, Grok, which Malaysia and the Philippines subsequently followed. Teo advocated for discussions to share experiences and best practices to enhance regional cooperation.

In a related move, both Malaysia and Indonesia are set to impose restrictions on social media use by teenagers under 16, aligning with the Online Safety Act (ONSA) 2025. Malaysia's restrictions will take effect in July, while Indonesia plans to implement its measures in March. Teo acknowledged the differences in approach, with Malaysia currently focusing on social media platforms, while Indonesia considers broader restrictions.

Teo concluded by affirming the shared intentions of both governments to improve online safety. She expressed interest in studying Indonesia's broader approach to understand its potential benefits and implementation.
