Kuala Lumpur:The government will prioritize the security and interests of Malaysians in addressing the Myanmar refugee situation, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that the government's strategy involves comprehensive efforts, including collaboration with Myanmar for the voluntary and phased repatriation of refugees. This approach includes structured measures through enforcement, inter-agency coordination, and cooperation with the refugees' countries of origin.
Anwar acknowledged that the Myanmar refugee issue is a long-standing problem, impacting the country's security, social affairs, and management. He assured that the government will tackle the issue comprehensively, prioritizing Malaysian security and interests while adhering to legal and humanitarian principles.
Following discussions with Myanmar, an agreement was reached for the voluntary repatriation of 5,000 refugees in stages. Today marks the start of the first phase, with 1,476 refugees beginning the process agreed upon by both countries.
