Kuching: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged for immediate solutions to the persistent flood and water supply issues plaguing Sarawak, emphasizing the necessity to safeguard the welfare of the state's residents. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach, involving the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), to address these challenges, with funding already allocated for most related projects.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar discussed these concerns during a meeting with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and other state leaders in Kuching. The meeting delved into various issues concerning the interests of the Sarawak people, including the development agenda, economic strengthening, and enhancing cooperation between the Federal and state governments. Anwar also noted the importance of resolving the flood and water supply challenges in Sarawak, as conveyed in a Facebook post following the meeting.
Anwar stated that the meeting was part of a series of dialogues with state governments across the nation, underscoring the principle that sustainable development should begin by listening to the needs and aspirations of the people in each state. He stressed that such open dialogues are crucial for refining and addressing the needs of state communities, rather than merely fulfilling bureaucratic obligations.
Beyond domestic issues, Anwar shared updates on the conflict in West Asia, mentioning discussions with leaders from several Gulf countries, Iran, and Turkiye. These nations reached out to Malaysia to exchange views on the current situation, and Anwar expressed Malaysia's views, emphasizing the importance of easing tensions to promote global peace. He noted the honor of these countries seeking Malaysia's perspective, given its relatively small standing in the international arena.
