AirAsia X Targets Central Asia for Network Expansion

Kuala Lumpur: Medium-haul low-cost airline AirAsia X Bhd is setting its sights on Central Asia as a key area for flight network expansion, driven by strong market demand and the region’s relative lack of commercial airline services. Chief Executive Officer Benyamin Ismail highlighted that the airline has already initiated flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan since March last year and recently began services to Tashkent, Uzbekistan this October. Another new route announcement is anticipated soon.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Benyamin Ismail emphasized the untapped potential of the Central Asian market, noting that few airlines currently service the region. He cited that without AirAsia X, traveling to Almaty could take up to 18 hours, whereas a direct flight with AirAsia X reduces travel time to just eight hours. He mentioned that the airline is also exploring routes to Turkey, Azerbaijan, and other Central Asian countries, with a long-term goal of expanding towards Europe.

Benyamin pointed out that Central Asia offers not only lower tourism costs but also rich historical and Islamic cultural attractions appealing to the Malaysian market. The launch of the Kuala Lumpur-Tashkent route marks a strategic milestone in AirAsia X’s broader expansion across Asia.

He noted that Uzbekistan’s economy is rapidly growing, with an expanding middle class eager to discover new destinations. The Almaty route’s success has highlighted increasing tourism demand to Central Asia, reinforcing AirAsia X’s vision to build a comprehensive network that supports regional development and connects travelers to new destinations.

Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Karomidin Gadoev, commented on the significance of AirAsia X’s direct flights to Tashkent in strengthening Uzbekistan-Malaysia relations. He noted that the route enhances connectivity, boosts tourism exchanges, and offers new investment opportunities between the two countries.

According to a statement from AirAsia X, travelers can now explore Tashkent with promotional fares starting at RM99 for economy seats, available from June 23-29, for travel between October 15, 2025, and September 14, 2026. Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is renowned for its stunning Islamic architecture, bustling bazaars, and beautiful green parks.
