AHIN 2026: UKM Earns Silver For Intellectual Property Management Excellence

Kuala lumpur: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) won a silver medal in the Best Intellectual Property Management category at the National Intellectual Property Awards (AHIN) 2026, organised by Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the achievement makes UKM the only higher education institution listed as a finalist in the category. Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) won the gold medal, while Monsta Sdn Bhd received the bronze.

Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer UKM (INOVASI-UKM) director Prof Dr Sawal Hamid Md Ali said the recognition reflects the university's ability to manage its innovation ecosystem in a structured manner and penetrate the industry market. 'The evaluation covered the entire innovation management ecosystem, from intellectual property registration to value enhancement and scaling towards commercialisation,' he said in a statement today.

Among the aspects assessed were the institution's ability to manage intellectual property registration systematically, strengthen research outputs through capacity-building programmes, and ensure innovations are translated into marketable products or technologies.

Meanwhile, UKM orthopaedic specialist Prof Dr Mohd Yazid Bajuri received a bronze medal in the Innovative Hero Award (Patent category) for the MyB Prosthetic Limb. He said the MyB Prosthetic Limb is an innovation in prosthetics and orthotics designed specifically for individuals with below-knee amputation through the start-up company MyB Innovation Sdn Bhd. 'The prosthetic is equipped with ankle joint movement, allowing more flexible and natural motion. This makes it easier for users to perform floor activities such as prayers, yoga and other daily routines,' he said.

The event was officiated by Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
