Kuala lumpur: Airport operators must exercise agility and flexibility, and collaborate to navigate the growing uncertainties, such as geopolitical tensions, operational disruptions, and changing passenger expectations, that the global aviation industry faces. Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani emphasized the need for rapid responsiveness to crises while ensuring seamless passenger experiences and fostering long-term connectivity growth.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Izani cited the recent conflict in West Asia as a sudden crisis that impacted passenger traffic, particularly affecting flights to destinations like Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Dubai. Despite these disruptions, the aviation industry has demonstrated resilience, with passengers quickly adjusting travel routes and airports adapting to evolving demand patterns. Izani highlighted the importance of flexibility and agility in managing these challenges.
Izani noted that Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is seeking to leverage changing travel flows to strengthen its role as a regional hub, capitalizing on opportunities as passengers explore new routes to Europe. He stressed the importance of close cooperation among governments, airlines, and airport operators to maintain connectivity and support industry recovery, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.
MAHB, which manages 39 airports across Malaysia, including one in Istanbul, Trkiye, is committed to ensuring balanced development and connectivity across the country. Izani emphasized the need for continuous upgrades and improvements at airports in Sabah and Sarawak to support regional connectivity.
Collaboration among various agencies operating within airports is increasingly critical to ensuring smooth passenger journeys and efficient operations. Izani underscored the necessity of coordination involving border control agencies, customs, police, and tourism authorities to deliver seamless travel experiences.
Operational improvements at KLIA, such as measures to ease congestion at the airport curbside, have been introduced to enhance passenger flow. Izani explained that these initiatives required approvals from multiple authorities, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation. MAHB's focus on balancing capacity expansion, customer experience, and sustainability is evident in ongoing expansion projects at Penang International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport, as well as sustainability initiatives like solar energy projects.
The three-day ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East Assembly and Conference, held from May 12 to 14, gathered approximately 500 airport leaders and aviation stakeholders to discuss industry resilience, sustainability, connectivity, and future growth.
