Ageing Population Expected to Boost Malaysia’s Pharmaceutical Demand

Baku:The country's pharmaceutical demand is anticipated to rise due to demographic changes, as Malaysia is on track to become an ageing nation by 2036. This shift is attributed to increased life expectancy and a declining birth rate, as highlighted by MBSB Investment Bank Bhd (MBSB IB).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MBSB IB has noted that the ageing population is leading to a sharp increase in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), creating a sustained demand for pharmaceutical therapies. This trend moves away from temporary demand spikes and points towards a more permanent, structural demand.

MBSB IB suggests that pharmaceutical companies should transition from focusing on short-term acute care, such as antibiotics and analgesics, to long-term maintenance medications for conditions related to cardiovascular, metabolic, oncological, and geriatric health. Additionally, addressing multi-morbidities in elderly patients is expected to drive ongoing growth in both public and private healthcare sectors, increasing the demand for biologics, biosimilars, and targeted therapies.

The investment bank maintains an optimistic outlook for the pharmaceutical subsector, seeing potential for future medicine security. Local pharmaceutical companies, contract manufacturers, and healthcare logistics providers are expected to benefit commercially from these macro policy shifts. Consequently, MBSB IB continues to uphold a positive stance on the healthcare sector.
