Kuala Lumpur: The operator of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1), AFA Prime Berhad, is preparing for an anticipated rise in traffic from March 27 to April 6, as the Aidilfitri celebration approaches.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, AFA Prime Berhad’s executive director, Radzimah Mohd Radzi, announced that the highways are expected to witness peak eastbound travel from Thursday until March 30, while westbound traffic is projected to increase from April 4 to 6. During this period, the daily traffic on KLK is estimated to rise by 70 percent, reaching 187,000 vehicles from the usual 110,000. Similarly, LPT1 could see an 83 percent increase, with daily traffic potentially growing from 41,000 to 75,000 vehicles.
To manage the anticipated traffic surge, AFA Prime Berhad will boost its operational capacity, increasing manpower in the toll and traffic divisions by 21 percent. Further measures include deploying patrol teams, Highway Patrol Vehicle (EMPV) units, and RELA officers at key locations such as toll plazas and Rest and Relax (RandR) areas to ensure traffic flows smoothly.
The Traffic Control Centre (TCC) will engage in real-time monitoring and response coordination, while 24-hour tow truck and emergency services will be strategically positioned to provide immediate assistance. Additionally, facilities along KLK and LPT1 will be enhanced, with selected rest areas receiving portable toilets and additional parking spaces. Cleaning staff numbers will also be increased at RandRs to accommodate more visitors, and all highway petrol stations will operate round-the-clock.
Radzimah emphasized that these measures are part of AFA Prime Berhad’s commitment to ensuring a smooth, safe, and worry-free journey for families traveling during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Improved traffic management, increased manpower, and continuous monitoring are expected to contribute to a seamless festive experience for all highway users.
In a related effort, AFA Prime Berhad, in collaboration with the Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA) under the Jom Balik Kampung initiative, will distribute 2,000 iftar kits to road users at the Gombak Toll Plaza on Thursday.
