65 Percent of MADA Paddy Areas Prepared for Planting Post-Aidiladha: Mohamad

Kuala lumpur: A total of 65 percent of paddy cultivation areas under the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) are now prepared for the planting season, with farmers expected to commence sowing seeds after Aidiladha. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu confirmed this during his visit to Perlis, noting that the paddy fields have begun receiving necessary water supplies, which boosts confidence in proceeding with planting activities after the festive period.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Sabu observed that water levels in the plots and dams are rising, ensuring sufficient water supply for planting. This comes in response to a report highlighting that only 10 percent of the 56,000 paddy farmers in Kedah, including those in the MADA area, have started planting, as the majority delay due to weather concerns.

Mohamad acknowledged the farmers' apprehensions about unpredictable weather impacting crop yields, but expressed optimism that the current water supply would support planting efforts. He emphasized the challenge of weather unpredictability and the importance of starting the planting process soon, with MADA actively monitoring the situation.

Addressing issues of rising operating costs, Mohamad assured that the government remains attentive and continues to offer assistance in land preparation and agricultural inputs. Additionally, he discussed Gardentopia, an initiative reflecting the government's dedication to enhancing national food security by involving local communities and civil servants. This initiative aligns with the ministry's goal to promote domestic agriculture through the Home Garden (KENDIRI) campaign, encouraging sustainable food production to mitigate living costs and address global economic challenges.

Mohamad highlighted Gardentopia as part of Malaysia's evolving agricultural transformation, marking several developmental phases since 1960, with future plans extending to 2030 supported by a RM30 million allocation. Gardentopia, situated at Rooftop Podium 1, Wisma Tani, serves as a hub for information, training, and interactive learning on urban agriculture, targeting those interested in the edible garden concept.
