Perlis:A total of 5,278 domestic violence cases have been reported nationwide in Malaysia as of August, according to statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development secretary-general, Datuk Dr. Maziah Che Yusoff, stated that Perlis recorded 40 cases, a decrease from the 48 cases reported during the same period last year. She emphasized that while the decrease is positive, advocacy, awareness, and preventive efforts must continue consistently.
Maziah highlighted that these statistics represent individuals and families in need of protection, intervention, and ongoing support. She stressed the importance of fostering a society that is sensitive, proactive, and firm in rejecting domestic violence. During the launch of the Well-being Advocacy Programme for Women@Domestic Violence (Aku Wanita@KRT) and the state-level PRISMAnita Open Day 2026, she pointed out that domestic violence in the digital age also includes technological misuse and threats via communication mediums.
Furthermore, Maziah mentioned that economic exploitation, movement restrictions, and social interaction limitations are forms of domestic violence, alongside emotional, psychological abuse, and sexual violence. She warned that domestic violence often begins subtly, through actions like excessive control or financial restrictions, often dismissed initially as trivial.
Maziah urged the importance of recognizing early warning signs, seeking help, and rejecting the belief that domestic violence is a private matter. She noted that the Aku Wanita@KRT and PRISMAnita Open Day are part of governmental efforts under the National Women's Policy and Women's Development Action Plan 2025-2030 to enhance women's safety and well-being at the community level.
The Ministry, in collaboration with the Women's Development Department, organized these programs to help the public identify signs of domestic violence, utilize support channels, and encourage victims to report abuse. As of September 13, twelve Aku Wanita@KRT programs have been conducted across 12 states, involving nearly 4,300 participants.
