Kuala Lumpur:The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) has announced significant changes to the 35th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM35), including a new judging system that involves former winners evaluating the 'Top 5' nominees in each category.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, FINAS chairman Datuk Dr Hans Isaac explained that the new format aims to align with the aspirations of the local film industry, ensuring a more transparent judging process recognized by industry peers. The initiative allows previous FFM winners to assess the nominees' works and performances, with industry players themselves selecting the winners.
The announcement was made during the launch and unveiling of the FFM35 Top 5 nominees, officiated by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching at Menara FINAS. The event was attended by key figures such as Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and FINAS chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib.
Hans further revealed that FFM35 will showcase over 80 local films and take place at Istana Budaya on November 21, with live broadcasting on RTM TV2. The Best Film award winner will receive RM1 million in Digital Content Fund (DKD) support to foster the creation of high-quality productions.
He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for focusing on the creative sector in Budget 2027, particularly with proposals for entertainment duty cuts or exemptions. These initiatives are expected to encourage the local film industry to enhance its presence on the international stage.
FINAS is aiming for four to five high-quality Malaysian films to reach international markets next year, supported by the available allocations and funds. Azmir noted that Istana Budaya was selected as the venue due to its historical importance and increased interest from viewers wishing to attend the festival.
