Kuala Lampur:Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh announced that a total of 3,150 teachers under the Contract of Service (CoS) scheme will receive their offer letters this month. This move is aimed at meeting the needs of the Year One intake for the upcoming academic year, which involves two cohorts.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong stated that the teacher appointments were approved based on enrolment projections and the Ministry of Education's (MOE) actual requirements. Candidates who have passed the health screening will see their appointments take effect on December 7.
Wong was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun regarding the MOE's readiness in terms of infrastructure and human resources, following the decision to allow six-year-old children to enrol in Year One starting from the 2027 academic year. As of September 30, 491,649 pupils had registered for the 2027 session, with 418,151 applications from the seven-year-old cohort and 73,498 from the six-year-old cohort.
To address enrolment needs, the MOE is constructing additional classrooms using the modular Industrialised Building System (IBS) method. Currently, 677 projects are underway to build 1,478 extra classrooms at 605 schools. Additionally, there are 1,514 maintenance and upgrading projects aimed at converting existing special-purpose rooms into classrooms.
Wong assured that the MOE will continue to monitor registration progress and the readiness of schools, states, and districts, making necessary adjustments as the data evolves. In response to concerns about a potential surge in last-minute registrations, Wong mentioned that registration trends have remained consistent, with no sudden increase expected before the 2027 school session. The policy change allowing six-year-olds to enrol is based on parental choice, with seven-year-olds remaining the primary entry group.
