Kuala lumpur: A total of 277 workplace accidents resulting in permanent and temporary disabilities across various sectors were recorded in Melaka during the first six months of this year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Melaka Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director Ramesh Zakir Shamsul noted that during the same period, three workplace fatalities were reported-two in the construction sector and one in the manufacturing sector. He stated that while the workplace accident cases reported in the state remain relatively under control, DOSH continuously monitors the operations of industries or companies to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health procedures.

Ramesh emphasized the responsibility of employers to report every workplace accident, assuring that detailed investigations would be conducted under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514). His comments were made following the launch of the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB)-level 2026 Occupational Safety and Health Week celebration, officiated by state deputy senior executive councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin. The event was also attended by Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman and DOSH deputy director-general (Occupational Health) Ahmad Jailani Mansor.

Ramesh Zakir further stated that Melaka DOSH is committed to collaborating with various parties, including employers and local authorities such as MBMB, through the organization of programs like workshops and ceramah (talks) on occupational safety and health. He highlighted the significant role employers play in raising awareness on occupational safety and health, acknowledging MBMB's assistance in promoting these efforts through various initiatives.
