Sandakan: A total of 1,048 people from 224 families affected by the fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, have been placed at six relief centres (PPS) as of noon today. The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat has coordinated the efforts to provide temporary shelter for the displaced residents.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the victims are being housed at various facilities including the Batu Sapi PPR hall, Sekolah Kebangsaan Gas hall, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Bahagia hall, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Sapi, Sibuga hall, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Karamunting. These centres were opened on Sunday to accommodate the sudden influx of evacuees.
In a recent statement, it was mentioned that two additional relief centres, Dewan Serbaguna Warga Tua and Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Tiong Hwa, were opened yesterday. These centres are currently in the process of updating their data to ensure all victims receive the necessary assistance.
The devastating fire that broke out on Sunday in the Kampung Bahagia water village in Sandakan razed approximately 1,000 homes, affecting an area spanning more than four hectares. The rapid response by local authorities and disaster management teams has been crucial in providing immediate support to those impacted by the blaze.
