Bangalore: The Zayed Sustainability Prize's flagship initiative, Beyond2020, has deployed solar-powered health centres across India, improving access to reliable healthcare services for more than 200,000 people.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the deployment in Karnataka, southwestern India, includes six solar-powered health facilities equipped with energy-efficient medical technologies. The facilities are helping strengthen healthcare resilience in remote communities with limited access to electricity, enabling patients to receive essential services closer to home.

The United Arab Emirates Minister of Health and Prevention, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh said Beyond2020 continues to support solutions that improve lives, strengthen resilience and advance global cooperation, adding that the India deployment reflects a shared commitment to expanding equitable access to essential healthcare services.

Meanwhile, SELCO Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Dr Harish Hande said solar innovation can help redesign healthcare facilities to make quality medical services more accessible, particularly in remote communities.

The solar-powered facilities are equipped with photovoltaic systems generating between two and 15 kilowatts of power, supported by off-grid solutions and lithium-ion battery storage capable of providing up to two days of power. They also include energy-efficient medical technologies supporting neonatal and maternal care, immunisation, digital diagnostics and telemedicine services.

SELCO Foundation also collaborated with the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement to deploy a mobile health clinic, extending healthcare services to underserved communities and supporting the initiative's long-term impact.

Since its launch, Beyond2020 has completed 19 deployments across energy, health, water and food-related solutions, benefiting more than 429,800 people across multiple countries. Colombia has been identified as the location for the initiative's 20th deployment.
