Segamat: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has approved an allocation of RM650,000 to build a ‘pit stop’ at Sungai Kapeh, near the second Segamat bridge on Jalan Laksamana, to serve as a rest area for food delivery riders. Sekijang Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa announced that construction of the pit stop began in June and is expected to be fully completed next month.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Zaliha expressed gratitude to the Segamat Municipal Council (MPS) for their role as the implementing agency in making the project a reality. She noted that while the MADANI Government has recently passed the Gig Workers Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat, providing support to gig workers, the Sekijang constituency is also providing this rest facility as a gift to its local delivery riders.
Zaliha, who also serves as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), stated that the facility was among her election manifesto pledges during the last General Election. This promise came after her engagement with 100 food delivery riders from platforms like FoodPanda and GrabFood, who voiced their need for a place to rest while waiting for orders, especially within the Sekijang parliamentary constituency.
She further explained that the riders had expressed their concerns about the lack of a resting area, which led her to include the establishment of a pit stop in her manifesto. To fulfill this commitment, she collaborated with the KPKT and MPS, resulting in the ministry approving the necessary funding for the pit stop’s construction.
