Kuala lumpur: Lembaga Zakat Selangor (Zakat Selangor) has emphasized its lack of involvement in the ongoing investigation of a misappropriation case concerning zakat funds totaling RM230 million.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Zakat Selangor's chief executive officer, Mohd Khaidzir Shahari, clarified that their institution functions as the official zakat authority of Selangor, operating under the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS). It adheres to stringent legal provisions and a comprehensive governance framework that includes checks and balances. The management of zakat funds is subject to multiple layers of audit and monitoring, involving both internal and external reviews, to ensure orderly and controlled fund management.
Mohd Khaidzir noted that media reports have highlighted the arrest of several individuals related to the alleged misappropriation of zakat funds currently being investigated. He stressed that the case pertains to a non-governmental organization (NGO) and is not connected to Zakat Selangor or its zakat management activities. Zakat Selangor stands firmly against any misuse of zakat funds and is committed to maintaining zakat management according to established governance frameworks.
While the investigation is ongoing, Mohd Khaidzir stated that no further comments would be provided and advised the public to rely on official channels for accurate information. He also encouraged making zakat payments through the official website, www.zakatselangor.com.my.
Additionally, Mohd Khaidzir urged all parties to refrain from spreading false information, as it could create confusion and weaken public trust in the zakat institution.
