Xi Jinping Emphasizes Partnership with US Amidst Economic Tensions

Busan: China and the United States should be partners and friends, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated during his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the Gimhae Air Base in Busan, South Korea. Xi emphasized that it is normal for two economic powerhouses to experience frictions occasionally.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Trump praised Xi as a great leader, expressing optimism about a long-term positive relationship. Xi acknowledged that the two nations, given their different national conditions, do not always agree but highlighted the importance of maintaining the course for China-US relations. He conveyed his belief that China’s development aligns with Trump’s vision to make America great again.

Xi reiterated that both countries have the capability to support each other’s success and prosperity. He mentioned that both leaders have communicated frequently since Trump’s re-election, resulting in a basic consensus on addressing major economic and trade concerns. This consensus, Xi noted, set the stage for their current meeting.

Trump also highlighted the progress made in their discussions, hinting at future agreements. Xi expressed readiness to work with Trump on strengthening China-US relations and fostering a conducive environment for both nations’ development. Trump acknowledged Xi’s negotiating skills and suggested the possibility of a future trade deal.

Xi appreciated Trump’s role in the recent Gaza ceasefire agreement and mentioned China’s efforts in facilitating peace talks in various regional disputes, including the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Cambodia and Thailand. Xi stressed the importance of China and the US collaborating on global challenges to achieve significant outcomes for both countries and the world.

Both leaders are in South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Week in Gyeongju. APEC, comprising 21 economies, plays a crucial role in global economic growth, contributing significantly to the world’s GDP and trade. The region, with its large population, continues to be a vital driver of global development and is projected to grow steadily.
