Xi Jinping and Trump Highlight Partnership Amid Economic Frictions During APEC Meeting

Busan: China and the United States (US) should be partners and friends, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his meeting with his counterpart Donald Trump at the Gimhae Air Base in Busan, South Korea. Xi emphasized that it is normal for two economic powerhouses to have frictions at times.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Trump called Xi a great leader, stating, “President Xi is a great leader of a great country, and I think we are going to have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time, and it is an honor to have you with us. Thank you very much.”

Xi noted that China’s relations with the US have remained stable overall. Despite differences, he argued that it is normal for the two leading economies of the world to experience frictions occasionally, especially when facing challenges. He expressed confidence that their leadership could guide China-US relations in a positive direction.

Both leaders have maintained communication through phone calls and letters since Trump’s re-election, Xi said. He believes that Beijing and Washington can help each other succeed and prosper together, reflecting a shared vision for development.

Xi highlighted progress made in recent economic and trade consultations, where teams from both sides reached a basic consensus on addressing major concerns. Trump also acknowledged the consensus reached and expressed optimism about further agreements.

The meeting provided necessary conditions for advancing China-US relations, Xi stated, expressing readiness to collaborate with Trump on building a strong foundation for future cooperation.

Trump described Xi as a “very tough negotiator” and hinted at the possibility of a China-US trade deal. Xi appreciated Trump’s role in the recent Gaza ceasefire agreement, acknowledging his enthusiasm for resolving regional issues.

Xi also mentioned the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Cambodia and Thailand, indicating China’s efforts to promote peace and resolve border disputes. He emphasized the global responsibility of China and the US to work together for mutual and international benefit.

Both leaders are attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Week in Gyeongju, South Korea. APEC, comprising 21 economies, represents a significant portion of global GDP and trade, playing a crucial role in international economic growth and integration. The region is expected to continue its development trajectory, driving global economic expansion.
