Writers Must Serve As Moderating Voices To Curb Extreme Polarisation – DPM Fadillah

Kuala lumpur: Writers and literary figures must serve as moderating voices in society by delivering measured criticism and offering constructive alternative thoughts to curb extreme intellectual and emotional polarisation, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said. He emphasized that in every era, writers function as thinkers, social observers, and drivers of public discourse. Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony of the Creative Writing Competition organized by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), he highlighted the essential role of writers in interpreting change and providing meaning to the nation's social journey.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah elaborated that literary works are not merely a form of creative expression, but also serve as a medium for thought and an intellectual vehicle. These works honestly and meaningfully record the pulse of society, its current challenges, and future aspirations. Fadillah noted that literature is instrumental in shaping individuals who are thoughtful, ethical, and possess a strong self-identity. It also serves as a historical record of events, ideas, and anxieties of the time, providing guidance for future generations.

The deputy prime minister expressed concern over the current era, which is saturated with easily accessible information, much of which may not be authentic. He highlighted the importance of the public becoming wiser in evaluating, considering, and distinguishing between truth and falsehood, especially in the context of social media.

Fadillah addressed the complexities brought about by rapid technological change and borderless connectivity, stressing the importance of cultural and value-based grounding in human development. National progress, he argued, should not be measured solely by material gains but should also rest on strong values, critical thinking, and national character. This echoes the late Tun Abdul Razak's emphasis on unity and human development as the foundation for the nation's survival.

In line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda, Fadillah pointed out that language and literature are key to building a thoughtful, civil and cohesive society grounded in tolerance and mutual respect. He added that the government remains committed to strengthening the creative writing ecosystem by nurturing new talent, expanding publishing opportunities, and enhancing public appreciation of local works. This includes leveraging digital platforms to reach wider audiences, particularly younger generations.
